Oscars 2015: The Year of not taking Risks

This year I’ve written less about the Oscars than ever before. I wondered if the reason for this lack of enthusiasm to cover the 2015 race had to do with personally being overwhelmed by other obligations. After seeing all of the nominees and dwelling on the Academy’s choices, I’ve determined that’s not the case.

This weekend produced two guild stunners that shook up the Oscar race in a big way. We all thought after Best Picture wins from many critics groups and the Golden Globes, “Boyhood” would easily stroll its way to victory. Or so we thought.

For a full list of nominees, go here. Alex: No “Lego Movie”? I mean, seriously Academy. No “Lego Movie”? It was the snub of the morning we certainly didn’t see coming. Sure, things like “Nightcrawler’s” Jake Gyllenhaal getting the boot in favor of “American Sniper’s” Bradley Cooper were a surprise. We’re used to late-in-the-year flicks coming in and snatching of nominations from early releases, though.

Care to watch the Golden Globes this year? That’s OK – I didn’t really feel like it either. The year is 1940. Adolf Hitler is at the zenith of his power. Having conquered multiple European territories and formed multiple international alliances, the German dictator is seen as the most dominant leader in the world. Charlie Chaplin – Hollywood’s most dominant leader – decides to release a film that pokes fun at Hitler’s rise.
