Judging from the nearly 23 million views that Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You” video already has, I’m pretty late to this party, so this post might be a few weeks behind. But that doesn’t mean I can’t talk about how great the song is. And let’s be honest, Jepsen made a masterpiece of pop culture with the music video.
It’s all-too obvious that “I Really Like You” is going to be the song you can’t get out of your head for the foreseeable future. And Jepsen’s knockout performance on the outstanding Saturday Night Live hosted by Michael Keaton only goes to show you that she might be invading our lives for a while this time. Her 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe” screamed of one hit wonder-dom, but with “I Really Like You” poised to be the song of the summer and her new single “All That” being named a “Best New Track” by super hip Pitchfork.com, you can expect that her career trajectory is going to go where most never thought it would. And to be honest, I’m ok with that. And you should be too. Catchy songs, funny videos, a still squeaky-clean image, these are all things the music world needs to get behind.
Kudos to Tom Hanks for agreeing to be in the “I Really Like You” video. It’s refreshing that he doesn’t take himself so seriously like many other Hollywood A-Listers. His appearance is absolutely hilarious and only serves to help him gain fans in a younger demographic. He really yucks it up throughout the video’s entirety and seems to genuinely be enjoying himself.
As for the Bieber cameo, I could have done without it. Maybe he’s turning the page on his own career.
If you’ve somehow managed to miss the video for “I Really Like You” take three and half minutes and let it brighten your day.
